The Naval Training Center: San Diego’s Cradle of the Navy
For more than 75 years, the Naval Training Center San Diego (NTC) served as one of the most important military training facilities in the United States. Hundreds of thousands of Navy recruits passed through its gates, where young men and women were shaped by discipline, education, and shared purpose before beginning their military service. For many, NTC marked a defining chapter of personal growth and transformation.
Although the base is no longer active, its legacy endures. NTC has been designated a National Historic Landmark District, recognized for both its architectural character and its profound cultural significance. Today, it remains a San Diego treasure—one that holds the memories of generations whose lives were shaped within its historic buildings.

From Navy Base to Arts District Liberty Station
When the Navy announced the closure of NTC in 1997, community and arts leaders recognized a rare opportunity. The expansive campus and historic buildings could meet a long-standing need for dedicated arts and cultural space in San Diego. As the City of San Diego developed the NTC Master Plan, 26 historic buildings were intentionally set aside for arts and cultural use, forming what is now known as Arts District Liberty Station.
Arts District Liberty Station was formally established in 2000, marking the beginning of a new chapter—one rooted in creativity, community, and cultural exchange.
A Living Legacy of Creativity & Community
Today, Arts District Liberty Station continues to serve San Diego with pride, once again transforming lives, but through art, education, and cultural engagement. The campus features a park-like setting, a historic promenade, and sweeping views of San Diego Bay, creating an inspiring environment for both artists and visitors.
More importantly, it is the activity within these buildings that defines the District. Arts District Liberty Station is a vibrant hub for nonprofit arts organizations, working artists, creative businesses, and educators. It offers innovative experiences for residents and visitors, dynamic programming for children and families, and meaningful opportunities to engage with San Diego’s creative community—all while honoring the site’s Navy heritage.
With renovations completed on 17 of the original 26 buildings, representing an investment of nearly $50 million, Arts District Liberty Station is now home to more than 100 tenants, along with historical exhibits and tributes that preserve and celebrate the site’s past.
From its origins as a naval training ground to its present role as a center for arts and culture, Arts District Liberty Station stands as a powerful example of how history, creativity, and community can come together to shape the future.
